Magnificent seven lands Hutchie League Cup glory

A SHOCKWAVE of seven second-half goals helped Hutchison Vale claim the South East Region under-19 Section 'A' League Cup against a spirited Cavalry Park side who were two goals to the good at half time.

The pulsating tie at New Dundas Park treated spectators to a glut of goals as Hutchie eventually lifted the silverware on a glorious evening in Bonnyrigg.

First up to put his name on the scoresheet was Cavalry's Michael Park, who raced through clear on goal before dinking the ball by Hutchie goalkeeper William Stewart in the eighth minute.

Then Hutchie's Craig Wojtowlyz's half volley from the edge of the box took a deflection and appeared to be spinning towards the top right hand corner, but Cavalry 'keeper Andrews conspired to defy both Wojtowlyz and gravity with a fantastic tipped save.

The second goal was to come soon after and Cavalry doubled their lead with a tremendous solo goal from Stewart Adams. The tall striker collected the ball in his own half, before rounding both the onrushing Vale goalkeeper Stewart on the edge of the box and defender Connor Kane before tapping the ball home from five yards out.

After the break, a resurgent Hutchie pushed to reduce the deficit, and did so soon after the restart when Mark Mitchell broke down the right hand side before powering in a fantastic cross to the head of Robbie Mason who buried his glancing header in the far corner to make it 2-1.

It was shortly to be 2-2 when, after a goalmouth scramble inside the Cavalry box, the ball fell conveniently to Wojtowlyz who from five yards out powered a hard shot off the post and the body of Andrews.

The Hutchie onslaught did not subside, and they went ahead when substitute Scott Coleman got a flick onto a Lewis Page free kick which deceived Andrews and ended up settling in the bottom right hand corner.

Cavalry's best and most spectacular chance of the half fell once again to Adams, who rifled a powerful, curling strike from 30 yards which produced a save of fantastic quality from Stewart who tipped expertly over the bar.

A 20-minute barrage of goals then settled the tie, the first coming as Martyn Robinson slammed home from close range and then Mason converted the penalty he won soon after to make it 5-2. Further strikes from Munro and Page extended Hutchie's advantage.

Cavalry manager Kevin Douglas was bemused at his side's second half demise. He said: "We didn't expect that sort of collapse against them in the second half and in a cup final. It was just one of those things."

Hutchie head coach Steven William Forrest felt his side were suffering from a bout of fatigue in the first half after a hectic fixture schedule, but praised his side's second half efforts. He said: "In the second half the boys got the ball down and played like a Hutchie team should do."
