Lynsey Sharp breaks two minutes but finishes fifth

The 23-year-old, who regained her British title last weekend, delivered a blistering sprint in the home straight to finish in 1:59.67, slashing over four-tenths of a second off her previous best.

World champion Eunice Sum, who will be one of Sharp’s chief rivals for Commonwealth gold later this month, eased to victory to underline her place at the top of the standings.

But Sharp, who has now overtaken Jessica Judd in the UK rankings, now plans to use next week’s Diamond League stop at Hampden to fine tune her preparations for the Games with another look at her main rivals.

“It’s really important preparation for Glasgow, to see the track and run on it and see how everything works,” she said. “But also to go up against all the British girls.”

Tyson Gay marked his return after a 12-month ban for a positive doping test by coming second in the 100m in 9.93 seconds but the American was beaten by another confirmed drug cheat, Justin Gatlin, whose winning time of 9.80 was the fastest in the the world this year.

James Dasaolu’s comeback from a hamstring injury brought the Briton victory in the 100m B race in 10.03 seconds while  Olympic 400m champion  Kirani James, who will run for Grenada at the Commonwealths, produced the fastest time in the event in seven years with victory in 43.74sec.

Meanwhile, in a massive boost for the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, six-time Olympic gold medallist Usain Bolt and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, twice an Olympic 100m champio, have been formally named in Jamaica’s 68-member team for next month’s event, a source with the Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association said last night.

Both sprinters, who each  received medical exceptions to miss last week’s Jamaican senior trials, have only been entered to compete in the 4x100m relays, the source said.

In early June, Bolt withdrew from meetings at the Ostrava World Challenge and Paris  Diamond League meet because he felt his conditioning was not at his required standard.
