LRF bowlers in double title success

London Road Foundry chalked up a double title 
success in the finals of the 
Edinburgh Women’s Bowling Association championships played at Whitehouse & Grange, with the rink skipped by Margaret Murray capturing the Fours crown.

Murray and her front-three of Dorothy Hunter, Mary Hay and Pat Turner followed the success of Rosemary Mackintosh in the Singles with a strong performance to score a 15-10 win over Essie Stoddart, Doris Kergan, Elspeth Oliver and Ruth Vasey of Balerno.

LRF lead 12-3 lead after nine ends but Balerno made their presence felt with a 2, 1, 1, 2 revival to 9 before Murray and Co halted that growing menace with a 1, 1, reply to 14-9 then traded a single to spark the 
victory salute.

“Winning the Fours title is a special achievement for us as it is the first time that LRF have welcomed that particular Cup into our trophy cabinet,” said Murray.

The final of the Pairs was a real battle with Margaret 
McShane and Hilda Melrose of Sighthill edging a 19-18 thriller after riding out the storm of a whirlwind finish from Zandra Kinnear and Rita Reid of 
Goldenacre.

It was roller-coaster ride for the Sighthill partnership, who blazed an opening 2, 2, 2 trail only to be crossed 7-6 by a 3, 1, 3 reply from Kinnear and Reid before accelerating back into a 15-7 lead with a run of 2, 1, 1, 5. They did make it to the winners enclosure but with sweat on their brows after Goldenacre chased them to the line with a 2, 2, 2, 4 fight back to 18.

Maitland were acclaimed the Triples champions with Ann Gordon skipping Barbara 
Winwick and Davina Patrizio from 4-3 to 15-3 then on to a 16-9 win over Bette Littlejohn, Ann Davidson and Laura Ross of Leith.
