Louise Kenney can carry on fine form in St Rule

New Scottish women's champion Louise Kenney is this weekend attempting to join the select club of players who have won the national title and the St Rule Trophy in the same year.

North Berwick's Catriona Matthew achieved the notable double not once but two years in succession as a Stirling University student from 1993. Anne Laing (Vale of Leven) won the Scottish and the St Rule in 1996 and Heather Stirling (Bridge of Allan) did the double in 2002.

Kenney has never been in contention at a St Rule Trophy tournament but this is a "new" Kenney this year - gone are the days when she was beaten by nerves on the big occasion. At Machrihanish a week ago, Kenney, 28, relaxed for the first time in three attempts at a Scottish Women's Championship final and it will be interesting to see if she carries on at St Andrews.

.Scots have a good record in recent St Rule Trophy tournaments. Krystle Caithness won in 2006, Kylie Walker in 2008 and 2009 while Laura Murray won a three-way play-off over the Old Course to win the title last year.

Mortonhall's Rachael Watton is another possible winner, for she did well in the stroke-play stages of the Scottish, qualifying in the No 2 spot ahead of Kenney, before losing in the quarter-finals to the eventual champion.
