London 2012 Olympics: Mark Cavendish gold will lift GB – Rogge

IOC president Jacques Rogge admits he hopes that cyclist Mark Cavendish can secure an early gold medal for Britain in today’s road race.

Rogge, himself a former
Olympian who competed for Belgium in sailing, says the atmosphere in central London will be “intense” with huge crowds expected for the culmination of the race in the Mall.

The IOC president said: “This is one of the crucial events, I know the entire British population is waiting for Cavendish to win that elusive gold medal.
