Lawrie’s hotel practice

PAUL Lawrie is hoping some putting practice in his hotel bedroom will put a smile back on his face in the Dubai World Championship.

The Aberdonian wasn’t proud of his attitude in Hong Kong last week and reckoned part of the problem was that he was performing so poorly on the greens at Fanling.

“[The final round] was as bad as it gets,” admitted Lawrie on his website. “I hit it awful, putted woeful and my attitude was the worst of the year. I wasn’t too clever all week on the mental side but [the final round] was very poor. But it happens, you’ve just got to deal with it and move on.”

Lawrie, who is flying the Saltire in the season-ending event along with Richie Ramsay and Scott Jamieson, had a putting lesson with Phil Kenyon, who works for flat stick guru Harold Swash, after playing nine holes at Jumeirah Golf Estates on Monday.

“His thoughts were that my putter was aimed too far left at address, which meant I had to compensate during the stroke,” added the former Open champion.

“He gave me an alignment mirror to help square the blade at address which I will work on in my hotel room.”

Lawrie, who won the Andalucia Open in March, is making his debut in the European Tour finale, which carries a first prize of just under £800,000.
