Lawrie set to make Masters return a family affair

PAUL Lawrie isn’t the only person feeling exited about the Aberdonian playing again in The Masters for the first time in eight years.

His youngest son, Michael, is also heading out to Augusta National and will be on caddying duties for the former Open champion in the traditional par-3 tournament on Wednesday.

“[Wife] Marian and Michael are coming with me,” said Lawrie, who last played in the opening major of the season in 2004 but received his invitation this year after getting back into the top 50 in the world.

“It’s a long time since I was last there and it’s going to be special having Michael with me,” he added. “He’s old enough to appreciate what it’s all about and he’s excited about wearing his white boilersuit and green cap when he caddies in the par-3 competition.”

Lawrie’s other son, Craig, is missing out on the family trip as he’s preparing for the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish Boys Championship starting at Murcar Links on Monday week.

The scratch player is due to play in one of the early first-round ties and wouldn’t have been able to make it home in time from Georgia.

Lawrie heads out tomorrow and is fighting fit again after the bout of bronchitis that laid him low after his last outing – the WGC-Cadillac Championship in Miami.

“I was pretty bad for a couple of weeks,” he said. “I even had some sympathy from Marian, so I must have been ill.”
