Lady Kashaan strikes gold for Winston

LADY Kashaan and Robert Winston yesterday triumphed by a head from Moidore in a grandstand finish to the totepool.com Musselburgh Gold Cup.

The 4-1 joint-favourites were always prominent before having a battle royal in the closing stages of the £25,000 feature race on a busy family day card at the East Lothian venue. However, there was a sting in the tail for Winston as he received a four-day ban (15-18 April) for using his whip over the permitted level.

He said: “I broke the rules and it’s as simple as that. She is a tough filly and stayed on really well. I have no plans to appeal and I’m just enjoying a good day – I haven’t looked at what I miss when I’m suspended.”

Winning trainer Alan Swinbank added: “Robert has come up to the yard and done a lot of work with Lady Kashaan. She’s a decent sort and I’m hoping she will continue to do well for us.”

Winston and Swinbank teamed up to land the opening 9f handicap with Sartingo before Winston completed a near 60-1 treble on Guising for David Brown in the 12f maiden.

Joe Fanning was another winning jockey to fall foul of the whip rules at the East Lothian course and he was banned for two-days for overuse of the whip as Skytrain took the 7f handicap by a neck from Red Gift.

The winner takes trainer Mark Johnston to just three short of 3,000 victories in Great Britain.
