Kyles pip Inveraray in cup final

Kyles’ Roddy MacDonald was delighted to lift the 109th Glasgow Celtic Society Cup on Saturday against Inveraray but admitted he felt sorry for his opponents.

After 120 minutes of Shinty the sides could not be separated, with the final locked at 0-0, and it took sudden death penalty hits to crown a winner.

MacDonald himself struck a penalty over the crossbar before Donald Irvine, Kyles’ man-of-the-match on the day, hit his second clincher to make it 3-2 after Dunky Kerr had also netted for Kyles. Relief and joy swept Strachurmore as the Tighnabruaich outfit picked up their first piece of silverware since last year’s Camanachd Cup.

However, MacDonald admits he would hate to have been the Inveraray players, crumpling to the turf, at that moment. “It’s a really hard way to
decide a final. Obviously, it is okay if you win but it’s horrible if you lose on
sudden death penalties.”

As Kyles were lifting the south’s big trophy, Newtonmore were taking a giant stride towards another Premiership title, defeating nearest challengers Lovat 1-0 at the Eilan.

Fraser MacIntosh netted the crucial goal in 37 minutes.
