Kings face stern test as they agree to switch for exams

Edinburgh KINGS have agreed to help out Glasgow University by switching the tip-off time for tomorrow’s Scottish League play-offs semi-final second leg at Portobello High to 5pm instead of 3pm as several of the students have exams.

But they have no intention of being generous on the court where they defend a narrow 74-70 lead from the first leg at Kelvin Hall last Sunday.

Coach Doug Reilly was praised by GU assistant coach Kevin McQuade for being so accommodating: “They were not obliged to do that but he said they didn’t want to play an understrength team.”

Coach Reilly could have been forgiven for making no concessions after a below-par first half in the first leg meant Kings again having to come with a late finish to rescue the lead after being 15 points down.

“We were poor defensively in the first half and allowed Glasgow to dictate for the most part,” said Scottish international centre Simon Flockhart, who returned after a recent hand operation to notch another “double double”. “Glasgow will be confident still and we’ll need to be at our very best to progress.”

The winners will play the winners of tonight’s other semi-final between Falkirk Fury and St Mirren at the Mariner where Fury defend what should be a comfortable 11-point lead from the first leg.

St Augustine’s HS and Forrester HS will be a real hive of age group activity on Sunday as the semi-final stages of the regional leagues take place.

Edinburgh Kings and Kool Kats, Boroughmuir Blaze and East Lothian Peregrines have all teams in action there and at the Crags Sports Centre where some regular season games have still to be played.
