Kinghorn wins first global medal at IPC world champs

Sammi Kinghorn landed bronze in the T53 200 metres final last night at the IPC world championships in Doha as British contenders went on a golden spree on the opening day.

The Scot, 19, was just outside her personal best in securing her first global medal in 30.72 seconds behind Australia’s Angela Ballard.

Kinghorn, three times a European champion last year, will now continue her quest today in the heats of the 100m. “I want to get to the finals and see what happens from there,” the Borderer said. “I’m going in ranked sixth in a few events. It’s my first worlds. So it’s about the finals first. But obviously one day, that’s the goal, to be a world and Paralympic champion.”

Elsewhere, Aled Davies won the UK’s first gold medal in the F42 shot put, the Welshman throwing a championship record of 14.95m. Sophie Hahn landed gold in the T38 100m and Kadeena Cox in the T37 100m with both smashing world records.
