Andy and Jamie Murray’s grandfather signed for Hibs in the early 1950s

Judy Murray has shared a press cutting of her father Roy Erskine who played for Hibs in the 1950s and people can’t get over how much he resembles her tennis star sons.

The 60-year-old mum of tennis champs Andy and Jamie Murray took to Twitter on Tuesday afternoon to proudly share the news report detailing the moment her father was snapped up by the Easter Road side.

Judy’s dad Roy Erskine enjoyed a stint with Hibs after completing his National Service in the fifties.

At a towering six foot in height, Erskine was a much-sought after defender who attracted the attentions of a string of clubs at the time, but it was the Edinburgh club who eventually captured his signature.

Judy’s press cutting, which includes a picture of her footy star dad, has got her Twitter followers talking, with a number of people remarking just how much he resembles her two famous sons – particularly former tennis doubles world number one Jamie.

@leo181711 tweeted: “Lovely photo of yor dad, Jamie look so much like him, they have the same smile.”

Judy's dad Roy Erskine played for the Hibees in the early 1950s.

“Strong resemblance to you and the boys!” added @CalumRSJones.

“Wow, Jamie is his double,” wrote @jogallagher18.

@SheryllWilson2 joked: “Wow like looking at a b&w pic of Jamie. Could do with him in defence now...Roy that is lol.”

Judy’s news report appeared in the Dundee Courier on Saturday, 1 November 1952 and provides a fascinating glimpse into the day her dad Roy was signed.

Under the heading Six-Foot Pivot Now A Hib, the football news report reads: “Roy Erskine is Hibs’ latest capture. He is a six-footer who plays equally well at centre-half or back.

”The Easter Road club pipped several other clubs for Erskine’s signature when he recently completed his National Service.

“The new Hib, who is now studying to be an optician, formerly played for Valleyfield Colliery in the Fife Junior League.”

Bridge of Allan-born Roy, who is now aged 89, played as a full-back in a handful of matches for the Hibees during the late Famous Five era, including an appearance in the East of Scotland Shield Final. However, he never managed a first team league appearance for the side.

Erskine’s time in Edinburgh proved to be short-lived, but he would later earn a number of appearances in the Scottish Football League for Stirling Albion and Cowdenbeath.

Judy previously retweeted an image of her dad playing for Stirling during a 5-0 defeat against Hearts.

Similarly to Tuesday’s posting, Judy’s Twitter followers couldn’t quite believe how much the young defender’s facial structure and even hairstyle resembled Andy and Jamie.
