Judo: Defeat for Conway after early setback

Britain suffered a disappointing second day in the European Judo Championships in Budapest.

Scot Sally Conway led British hopes in the -70kg category but, after a first-round bye, she was caught cold against Anka Pogacnik when, just seconds into the contest, the young Slovenian scored a yuko. Conway was unable to register a score to get back into the contest. Also in the -70kg division, Megan Fletcher won her first-round bout against Russia’s Ekaterina Denisenkova, but was held down for ippon by experienced Dutch judoka Linda Bolder.

In the men’s competition, Patrick Dawson lost to Musa Mogushkov, of Russia, and Jan Gosiewski was defeated by Israeli Sagi Muki in the -73kg division. Tom Davis also suffered an early exit against Ukraine’s Vitalii Dudchyk.
