Jessica Ennis to begin her season in Edinburgh

The appearance, which will mark Ennis’s first outdoor competition since her outstanding success at London 2012, will see her compete in three events for her club, Trafford AC – hurdles, javelin and long jump.

Tickets for the event on  Saturday 8 June, which features Ennis and others in action against hosts Edinburgh AC, are now available to purchase online from http://bit.ly/14Mprq1, priced at just £5 for adults and £2 for children.

Ennis, who was in the headlines at the weekend when she married boyfriend Andy Hill in Derbyshire, said: “I am looking forward to getting back into competition on 8 June at Meadowbank. Last year had some wonderful highs for obvious reasons but you cannot stand still for long in any sport – let alone one like athletics.

“I have been training hard with a view to this summer’s events and the World Championships in Moscow in August is the major goal. It will be good to compete again for Trafford AC in Edinburgh.”

Edinburgh Leisure chief executive John Comiskey said: “The team at Meadowbank are delighted to be hosting Jessica Ennis and all of the other athletes competing in the UK Women’s Athletic League in June. This is an excellent opportunity to see one of our country’s finest athletes in action and I would encourage people to snap up tickets for this exciting event as soon as possible.”

Ennis’s coach Tony Minichiello confirmed Ennis has a  Diamond League meeting in Oslo on her schedule – where she will again compete in two or three individual events. Her first heptathlon competition will be in Tallinn in Estonia at the end of June.

Minichiello said: “Edinburgh is a good opportunity for Jessica to blow the cobwebs away and get into competition again. We’re planning for her to do three events that day.

“The World Championships is the main target for the  season, so everything before then is looking towards peaking for Moscow. The Women’s League is the top level of club competition in Britain so Edinburgh is a good place to start.”

Ennis was pushed into silver at the World Championships in Daegu 2011 by Russian athlete Tatyana Chernova. Following her Olympic gold, she decided against competing in the indoor season.

Meanwhile, the Paralympic athletics events in London and Birmingham this summer will be broadcast on Channel 4,  British Athletics has announced.

The Sainsbury’s IPC Athletics Grand Prix Final in Birmingham on 29 June and the third day of the Sainsbury’s Anniversary Games at the Olympic Stadium on 28 July will be shown live by the Paralympic broadcaster.

Paralympians like 100 metres gold medallist Jonnie Peacock will also compete for the first time at the BT Great CityGames in Manchester on Saturday.
