Jamie Murray secures doubles triumph with Peers

Murray and Peers, the third seeds, overcame Spaniards Pablo Andujar and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez 6-3 6-4 in the final of the clay court tournament.

They did not drop a set throughout the competition and their success follows up their triumph at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship in Houston in April.

Murray, brother of Wimbledon men’s singles champion Andy, said: “We’ve been playing a few months now, working hard together to try and get the team as good as we can.

“We’ve had some good results and we’ll keep trying to go for the future.”

Murray, 27, is currently ranked 63rd in doubles, 40 places lower than his career high of 2011, but there have been encouraging signs since he teamed up with 25-year-old Peers after the Australian Open in February.

The pair showed they can compete with the best when they beat world number one pairing Bob and Mike Bryan to win the Houston title in April.

Murray added: “It’s been good. We’ve been playing a few months now, working hard together to try and get the team as good as we can.”

Peers said: “I thought it was a lot of fun. The balls bounce a bit higher, it’s a bit more lively. We handled it well.”

Murray’s brother, Andy, tweeted his congratulations: “Big congrats to my bro @jamie_murray and partner john peers 4 winning title in gstaad!”

Their mother Judy, captain of Britain’s Fed Cup team, added on Twitter: “Hip hip Murray!!!!!!”

Meanwhile, Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny, the world No 33, secured the Gstaad singles crown with a 6-3 6-4 defeat of Dutchman Robin Haase in the final of the Credit Agricole Suisse Open. The 31-year-old’s 68-minute victory was his first title success since February last year.

“I’m very happy,” said Youzhny, a former world No 8. “When you win a tournament, it doesn’t matter how you’ve played or who you beat.

My last title was at the start of last year in Zagreb, so it’s been quite long. “I’m trying everything to try and play more consistently at a high level.”

Elsewhere, British pair Colin Fleming and Jonny Marray were due to play in the Atlanta ATP doubles final overnight. Scotland’s Fleming and England’s Marray are seeded third and take on fourth seeds Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France and Dutchman Igor Sijsling.

In Azerbaijan, Elina Svitolina took her first WTA Tour title with a 6-4 6-4 win over Shahar Peer in the Baku Cup.
