Innes and Kick share Alpine ski title in France

Iain Innes (Boroughmuir High School) and Euan Kick (Hermitage Academy) were in great from in sharing the overall Under-16 title at the British Alpine Ski Championships in Meribel in France.

Iain was also overall champion in his age group in 2011 but missed out last year due to injury – so the comeback was even sweeter, especially considering he was one of the youngest competitors in the category.

The Championships are staged over three disciplines – Iain won the Super G, was sixth in the Slalom and second in the Giant Slalom.

Euan, who is a year older, won the Giant Slalom, was second in the Slalom and sixth in the Super G.

The majority of the competitors either now live in the Alps or attend private ski academies based in the mountains. By contrast Iain is in third year at Boroughmuir in Edinburgh and makes use of local facilities

He trains regularly on the plastic slope at Hillend – once a week with the School Club – and also heads through to the indoor facility at Braehead near Glasgow.

In addition, he works on his fitness, agility and stamina with regular gym and trampoline sessions and also some judo and mountain bike racing.

Involved in the FAST (Focussed Alpine Scottish ski Training) Programme, Iain has his sights firmly set on a skiing career. His goal is to make the 2018 Olympic Games with 2022 also in his sights.

Iain is grateful that his school also supports his dream, allowing time off for competition and providing homework to take on his trips.

Meanwhile, there has been a huge entry for the Scottish Schools’ Indoor Freestyle Championships at Snow Factor at Braehead on 24 April (Primary) and 25 April (Secondary).

Prior to the event, Snow Factor will be running 90min freestyle coaching sessions for £12 a head on the following dates and times.

April 18 to 21 - 5.15pm Primary Age Groups. 6.45pm Secondary Age Groups

April 22 to 23 – 6.45pm Secondary Age Groups
