Injuries take their toll on Edinburgh AC's Chris O'Hare

The Edinburgh AC star ended a rollercoaster six months by coming 12th in the mile at Saturday’s Muller Grand Prix in Birmingham, ensuring he will miss out on this month’s Diamond League finale. It followed the disappointment of ending up ninth in the European Championships final earlier this month in Berlin. And O’Hare, who is set for a tentative switch to 5000m in 2019, conceded that disappointment– and his injury-hit tilts at the world indoors and Commonwealths – have tested his limits.

“This has been the toughest season of my career,” the 27-year-old said. “It’s almost in a way easier if you get an injury as an athlete that it’s season-ending. Because when it’s not, and you can get back, it’s hard.

“I moved into sixth on the all-time British list this summer and I’m proud of things I’ve done. But there were gaps in my training because I missed too much.”

Edinburgh AC club-mate Jake Wightman will head to the Diamond League conclusion in Zurich after coming seventh in the 800m in Birmingham.

• Double Paralympic gold medalist Libby Clegg has been forced out of this week’s European para athletics championships in Berlin after guide runner Tom Somers picked up an injury on the eve of the showpiece. The 28-year-old Scot, who is captain of the British team, was only paired with Somers six weeks ago after her regular partner Chris Clarke was ruled out for the season. They were due to run both the 100 and 200 metres in the German capital.
