Indians exact revenge over Scotland with assured win

SCOTLAND slumped to a heavy defeat last night as India's second string claimed revenge at Citylets Titwood.

Pete Steindl's men had gone into the second game of this double-header on a high following Wednesday's sensational victory.

However, there was to be no repeat performance as India hit back to cruise to an easy 152-run win.

Chasing 278 to complete a famous double, the Scots were never up with the rate following the loss of three quick wickets.

Preston Mommsen was first to go when he was caught behind for a single while Ryan Flannigan followed soon after.

Teenage debutant Ollie Hairs hammered three boundaries and a towering six in a rapid 18 but was caught in the deep attempting another clearance.

Richie Berrington and Moneeb Iqbal, the heroes of Wednesday's run-chase, compiled a half-century stand as the Scots briefly fought back.

But neither was able to go on and make the big score Scotland desperately needed.

Iqbal top-scored with a battling 33 from 64 balls but Dhaval Kulkarni produced some devastating pace bowling to claim 5-29 as the Scots were dismissed for 129 with more than 14 overs remaining.

Earlier the Scots were kept at bay by a brilliant century from Indian skipper Chet Pujara.

Ally Evans, making his first appearance of the season, had made the breakthrough when he had Shikar Dhawan caught in the slips by Mommsen.

Matty Parker then removed Wednesday's centurion Ajinkya Rahane for 29.

But Pujara added 83 with Abhinav Mukund (50) and a further 109 with Manoj Tiwary (41) as the Indians took charge.

Pujara went on to finish unbeaten on 122 from just 116 balls, hitting 13 classy boundaries and a huge six. Berrington picked up three late wickets and skipper Gordon Drummond one as the Scots stuck to their task but India's total of 281-7 was more than enough.

Meanwhile, Scotland have been dealt a new blow after Middlesex star Josh Davey was ruled out of next week's World Cricket League.

The teenage all-rounder, who made his Scotland debut ten days ago, had been earmarked for a key role in the tournament in Holland.

However, Davey has been recalled by his county, leaving the Scots without a second member of their squad following the withdrawal of Majid Haq through injury.

Saltires coach Pete Steindl declared: "Unfortunately Middlesex have got injuries in their squad and have had to take Josh back from us.

"I've spoken at length with (Middlesex coach) Angus Fraser and I understand their position. We were looking forward to seeing him establish himself in the team but this is a situation we have to accept with our county players.

"I've been assured Josh will be available for our ODI against Bangladesh next month."

The Scots, who last night named Moneeb Iqbal and Ollie Hairs as replacements for Haq and Davey, fly to the Netherlands tomorrow and open their campaign against the hosts on Thursday.
