Hunterfield become the hunted as Hutchison Vale hit the mark

Hutchison Vale triumphed narrowly in the final of the SERYFA under-19 David Murray Cup, beating Hunterfield 3-2 in a lively encounter in front of a large crowd at Bonnyrigg's New Dundas Park.

Both sides were on form in front of goal and Hutchie's superb brand of football prevailed on the night.

Hunterfield took the lead twice but were unable to hold onto it as left back Craig Stevenson created two of Hutchie's second half goals to spark a winning comeback.

Hutchie started the match strongly and Scott Coleman had a brilliant chance to put his team into an early lead after beating the offside trap. Conner Handran's through ball allowed Coleman a one-on-one with Stephen Flynn, but the strong goalkeeper dived low to save. Handran and Coleman combined again and created another one-on-one opportunity, and this time Coleman's shot hit Flynn's legs.

A flurry of goals followed, and it was Hunterfield who took the lead. A corner was swung in from the left wing by Christopher Barnes. Jordan McCallion rose high and headed the ball powerfully into the roof of the net.

Hutchie replied straight from the kick-off with a goal worthy of gracing any cup final. Robbie Mason fired the ball from thirty yards which flew over Flynn into the top left corner of the goal.

Danny King scored Hunterfield's second to regain the lead. A deep free-kick was flicked onto King by Aaron Evans and the Hunterfield winger had a simple header into the middle of the net from three yards. Hutchie were unable to equalise before half time as Flynn stopped every shot that came at him and tipped a long -range shot by Coleman over the bar.

The black-and-yellows dominated the second half, with Coleman playing in Lewis Page soon after the restart but goalkeeper Flynn was equal to Page's shot.

Flynn was playing well, and prevented Mason from doubling Vale's tally soon after. Defender Calum Dalgleish was only able to clear a Hutchie corner to the feet of Mason on the edge of the area, but the goalscorer's powerful shot was tipped wide.

Twenty minutes into the second half, Hutchie were able to equalise. After a long dribble down the left wing, Stevenson's cross found the head of Page, who was unmarked inside the six-yard box.

He had a simple finish into the centre of the net.

Stevenson set up Hutchie's winning goal just minutes later. This time, Stevenson's cross from the left fell to Martyn Robinson, who emphatically volleyed the ball into the left corner of the goal.Hunterfield then resorted to a long ball tactic in an attempt to find a late equaliser, but the Hutchie defence stayed strong.

While Hutchison Vale were thrilled when the final whistle went, both teams could be proud to have been part of such a good advert for Scottish youth football.

I thought the boys gave 110 per cent At the end of the day it just wasn't to be but I'm proud of every one of our players and proud of all the support. Congratulations to Hutchison Vale - they won and they deserve it."

Winning coach Steve Forrester, who today leads his side to the South East Region Youth Cup final at Dunbar, said: "It was a very difficult game.
