Huizing is in a class of his own on links

sT ANDREWS LINKS TROPHY: Dutchman Daan Huizing produced a second links masterclass this year as he repeated his runway win in the Lytham Trophy over the Old Course yesterday.

An 11-shot winner in Lancashire, the 21-year-old went three better in Fife after posting a sensational 23-under-par total of 264 after closing efforts of 68 and 67.

The first player to win the Lytham Trophy and the Links Trophy in the same year, Huizing put his second shot at the first in the Swilcan Burn in the last two rounds but salvaged a five on each occasion.

“I have improved my attitude this year and have been concentrating on distance control,” said Huizing after beating the previous record by nine shots.

He will not consider turning professional until later in the season. His next event is the Amateur Championship at Royal Troon and Glasgow Gailes in a fortnight’s time.

Former winner Alan Dunbar (Rathmore) finished second, a shot ahead of Glenbervie’s Graham Robertson after he closed with a 64.

The 22-year-old Stirling University student, winner of the Craigmillar Park Open earlier in the year, had birdies at the first, second, fourth, fifth, seventh, tenth, 12th and 14th holes.
