Hughes urges Hibs to keep pressure on

JOHN HUGHES today insisted Hibs can keep the heat on Dundee United in the race for third place simply by winning.

The Tannadice outfit are in pole position to earn the tag "best of the rest" having opened up a five-point advantage on Hughes' players.

But today the Easter Road boss revealed he'll be using Manchester United's Champions League exit to show them just how quickly fortunes can change in football.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side looked set for a place in the semi-finals as they raced into a 3-0 lead against Bayern Munich, overcoming a single-goal deficit from the first leg in Germany.

However, the Old Trafford giants were stunned as Ivica Olic and Arjen Robben struck for Bayern, knocking United out on the away goals rule.

And that, Hughes claimed, was evidence a plenty as to why his side should continue to hunt down Dundee United. He said: "We won't be giving up the chase, football is funny and you just needed to watch last night's game to see how things change.

"We can't let our minds drift, we have six games left and the remit is to win all of them."

For a team which has won just twice in its last 12 outings that may seem a tall order but Hughes is convinced his players can build on their performance against Celtic last weekend while the return from injury of Alan Gow, David Wotherspoon, Kevin McBride and Kevin McCann will strengthen his squad.

Gow made an appearance as a late substitute against the Celts following a hamstring problem while McCann, who has been out since the opening day of the season, has returned to training with Wotherspoon and McBride expected to rejoin their team-mates in today's session having recovered from their respective ankle injuries.
