Horse Racing: Devil can come good for Gosden in all-weather debut at Kempton

Treasury Devil has failed to live up to early expectations this term but should not be ignored as he makes his first all-weather start at Kempton.

John Gosden’s charge looked a promising individual when winning his first two starts as a juvenile, and the Newmarket handler thought enough of him to try Group One company at Longchamp last October. However, he fell well short of the mark on that occasion on very soft ground and was only mid-division in a soft-ground handicap at Sandown on his reappearance in April.

The Bernardini colt did not run a bad race when third behind Ocean War in Listed company at Newmarket later that month, but something evidently went amiss as he did not make the track again until last month. His third behind Jet Away in a conditions event was pleasing enough and Treasury Devil most likely needed the outing.

The in-form Gosden switches his attention to the Polytrack for the Play Rainbow Riches At bluesq.com Conditions Stakes and given that he is a good-ground horse, he could find the new surface in his favour.

After finishing second on his racecourse bow, the Dark Angel gelding filled the same position at Wolverhampton last time, albeit some six lengths behind winner Right Result. He was far too keen in the early stages that day but if trainer Denis Coakley has managed to teach him to settle a bit better, Gabriel’s Lad should soon visit the winner’s enclosure.

Alan McCabe’s charge scored at Yarmouth in May and while he has mainly struggled since, the four-year-old showed signs of a revival when fourth at this track last time, not enjoying the best of runs before staying on at just the one pace.
