Hockey: Highland schools’ stars given call-up

THREE Millburn Academy pupils – Hamish Townshend, Charlie Fuller and Humzah Khan – have helped put Highland schools hockey on the map with their inclusion in the Scottish under-16 training squad.

Following this month’s raining camp at Bellahouston Park in Glasgow, they all hope to be included in the National squad for matches in the Netherlands in June and the Tri-Nations in Cardiff in July.

Hamish is a goalkeeper, Charlie is a defender and Humzah operates in midfield. “I know the Scottish coach was pleased with all three and it’s been great for them – and not just from a hockey sense,” said Miles Fuller, Charlie’s father and a Highland Active Schools Coordinator.

“There are five schools in Inverness and hockey all over the Highlands really is going from strength to strength. Gordonstoun School also joins in. They have pupils from all over the world and are always pleased to take part in tournaments. This season, we have had several players from Kingussie High School making a mark. It’s all related to their shinty background.”
