Hockey: Grassick has a goal glut on Tayside

CHRIS GRASSICK was the top scorer with eight goals in two matches as Inverleith opened their campaign in the Grove Menzieshill Invitational Hockey Tournament with two wins.

The Surbiton star showed his range of skills as the reigning Scottish indoor champions thrashed Grove Menzieshill, the current Division One leaders, 11-2 and Wales 12-2 at the Dundee International Sports Centre.

And the Scottish international claimed: “The best is yet to come.”

Grassick netted four in each game and said: “We have things to work on but everybody is contributing and we’ve still got some key players to come back into the squad.”

Inverleith play Highland Jaguars and Caledonian Cougars tonight and 2004 Olympian Graham Moodie is set to be in the club’s squad.

Jaguars and Cougars line-ups are made up of players vying for a place in the squad for the EuroHockey Indoor Nations Championship in Italy from January 13-15.

One major positive from yesterday’s play was the appearance of Stephen Dick. He signalled his return to competitive hockey with four goals from the two games and an inspirational performance.

The Fife-born player, who appeared for Great Britain in the Beijing Olympics, confirmed that he would appear for Inverleith in the Richard Docherty Indoor Cup in Edinburgh on January 7 and 8 and in the EuroHockey Indoor Championship II also at Edinburgh’s Napier University from February 17 to 19.

Midfield player Dick, who has not played competitively since being helicoptered to hospital in Slough after an injury suffered in a Great Britain training session in October, said: “We’re down on numbers for this tournament, we’re missing four key men, but Grove are also missing players because they are in the Scotland squad. That was, however, a really good performance.

“For me, it was good to be back and I’ll be playing in the Richard Docherty and the European event.

“The Euro event is massive for the club and we’re aiming to do well.”
