Hockey: Grange bang in 11 goals ahead of crunch with Kelburne

GRANGE hockey warmed up for their home clash with Division One front-runners Kelburne on Saturday with a comprehensive win at Hillhead.

And coach Colin Clarke said: “We’ve been threatening something like this for weeks.”

Scottish international Cammy Fraser and experienced defender Robb Barr both scored trebles as Grange whipped lowly Hillhead 11-2 in Glasgow.

Grange are second in the table and Clarke added: “It was really pleasing to see the work we’ve put into training pay off.”

Elsewhere, Jonathan Christie fired four goals for defending champions Kelburne to send title pretenders Inverleith packing 9-1. Christie ended his recent goal drought in emphatic fashion and three of his strikes came in seven minutes.

Kelburne were 5-1 ahead at the break with goals from Christie, a Mark Ralph double from penalty corners, Gareth Hall and Alan Forsyth. Inverleith’s hard-running John Harris netted from a penalty stroke just on half-time. Inverleith stepped-up the pace in the second half but Forsyth continued the goal blitz with a penalty stroke from Forsyth followed by three goals from Christie.

Steve McCurry, Inverleith’s coach, admitted: “They took full advantage of our bad start.”

Grove Menzieshill came from 2-0 down to beat Clydesdale 4-2 on Tayside and Western had a 3-0 win at bottom club Dundee Wanderers.
