Hockey: Grange and Inverleith will cross sticks with second place at stake

Currently, Grange have 30 points following their 3-1 victory over Edinburgh University last Saturday while Inverleith moved to within two points following their weekend win double, beating CALA Edinburgh 6-2 on Saturday and coming from behind again yesterday to edge Edinburgh University 3-1.

Grange were made to work hard for their ninth win after Grange lead 2-1 at the break but it could have been different if they had taken a number of clear-cut chances.

Gary Cameron and two penalty corner strikes from Robert Barr settled the issue with Stewart Laing replying for the home side.

Meanwhile, Inverleith collected their eighth win of the season when they came from 2-1 down to defeat struggling CALA Edinburgh 6-2, also at Peffermill.

The Meggetland men, with four 15-year-old players in their line-up, were 1-0 down early on to a Derek Salmond strike but a double from David Patterson handed them a shock 2-1 lead against the run of play.

Andy Malcolm and Phil Hall replied for Inverleith to make it 3-2 at the break and Chris Duncan, Ross Jamieson and Malcolm netted to complete the scoring.

Inverleith dominated play, making 28 incursions into the D in the first-half with only five from Edinburgh. It was the same story in the second with 26 circle incursions against two.

Yesterday, it was the students who dominated in the first-half and, once again, they were left to rue missed chances.

Graham Moodie broke the deadlock after 45 minutes, only for Phil Hall to net twice in five minutes and Andrew Johnson scored a breakaway third.
