Hockey: Fraser brace keeps Grange in sight of leaders Kelburne

A CAMMY FRASER double, plus a single from Andrew Brogdon, pushed Grange to within five points of Division One hockey pace-setters Kelburne.

Hard-working Clydesdale, however, belied their lowly league position and pushed the Capital club all the way.

Now Grange coach Colin Clarke looks to back up their seventh victory in ten games with Saturday’s away clash at Grove Menzieshill to keep pressure on Kelburne.

Clarke said: “I was pleased with the result as Clydesdale are a strong team. It was always going to be tough against them.”

Grange led through Fraser after 18 minutes and it was 2-0 two minutes before the break when Brodgon netted his first goal for the club.

Clydesdale hit back through Raymond Wrightson 11 minutes into the second-half following a fluid move initiated by midfielder Alan Law.

The Glasgow side then spurned two gilt-edged chances before Fraser netted again with five minutes left. Gordon Munro’s goal in injury time was too little too late.

Clydesdale’s coach Gordon Shepherd said: “We deserved a draw and the guys produced a great performance.”

Third-placed Inverleith’s scheduled clash with second-bottom Hillhead was postponed because of a clerical error. The match will be replayed.

Elsewhere, CALA Edinburgh came from 2-1 down to beat bottom club Dundee Wanderers 5-3 and secure a third win in ten games.

Skipper Scott Sutherland said: “Once we had a chat at half-time, and we stopped allowing them to make the game scrappy, we were okay.”

Western proved too strong for Edinburgh University in a 3-0 win with takes them above Inverleith and into third place on 20 points, two behind Grange and seven adrift of Kelburne.
