Hockey: Ferrier’s joy as Watsonians promoted

SKIPPER Magnus Ferrier today saluted his Watsonians squad after they swept back to the top flight of Scottish men’s hockey with a 4-1 win over CALA Edinburgh.

The 32-year-old scored in the victory and declared: “We thoroughly deserved the win.”

Watsonians, runners-up in Division Two, took the game to CALA early on and scored three in the opening 14 minutes at Peffermill through Craig Beattie, Ferrier and player-coach Calum Wood. CALA, who finished second bottom of Division One, pulled one back through David Patterson before Malcolm Reid sealed ’Sonians’ win.

Ferrier said: “Our gameplan worked perfectly. We went hard early and were 3-0 up in 14 minutes. They couldn’t keep up the pace.”

Ferrier, who has five youngsters in his squad, added: “This was a big game but they took it all in their stride. We’re promoted and we now know we have work to do to prepare for Division One.”

Watsonians women missed out on promotion to Division One when they lost 2-0 to Glasgow-based Western.
