Hill rises above the rest with super 70

GOLF: Calum Hill, a member of the Merchiston Academy squad coached by Alan Murdoch at King’s Acre, shot a great one-over-par 70 to win the under-18 title at the Independent Schools’ Golf Association Scottish Open at King’s Acre.

Jack Sallis (Wellington College) also shot 70, but Calum won thanks to a super inward half of three-under-par 32.

Jack’s score helped Wellington win the under-18 scratch trophy with Merchiston lifting the handicap title.

Alistair McDougal
(St Leonard’s School) was third scratch on 72, and 12-handicap Cameron Whyte (Stewart’s Melville) also shot 72 and had the best net score of 64.

In the under-15 Championship, Michael Hirmer (Loretto) shot a winning 71, while schoolmate John Dunn Butler had the best net score of 66. He shot 79 playing off 13.

Lesley Atkins, last year’s Scottish Girls Champion and a member of the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association’s National Squad, claimed the girls’ title on 76.

But it was a disappointing day for Loretto’s Hamish Mills. He played off a wrong tee and the penalty meant he had to settle for second best in the under-15 Category.
