Hibee history: Boss Auld's youngsters are spot on

HIBEES boss Bertie Auld made five changes to a side which had won 1-0 at Tannadice the previous Saturday.

And his faith in a few youthful faces was rewarded as UEFA Cup contenders St Mirren were dispatched at Easter Road.

A goal from Willie Jamieson and a penalty by Gary Murray gave Hibs the points despite a late consolation for the Buddies by Bill Stary – also from the penalty spot.

In the first half, Jackie McNamara was the main protagonist in midfield but the sides went in level at 0-0 with goal threats limited to long-range shots.

But Hibs took the lead when a corner by Bobby Flavell caused a panic in the Saints defence and Jamieson took the opportunity to poke the ball over the line from close range.

That gave Hibs confidence and they went looking for a second goal, which duly came in the 75th minute.

Midfielder Derek Rodier was fouled in the box and Murray confidently stepped up to crash the ball past Billy Thomson in the St Mirren goal.
