Hemed turns Rangers down

Rangers' new manager Ally McCoist has lost out on his first major signing target, it emerged last night.

Israeli internationalist Tomer Hemed had been pondering a move to either Rangers or Real Mallorca, and according to his agent Max Meltzer he has plumped for the Spanish club.

"Rangers are a fantastic club and Tomer knows that, so it was a very difficult decision for him. However, in the end, he decided to pursue the opportunity presented to him from Spain," said Meltzer.

Hemed, 24, was being pursued by several clubs, but Rangers had made him a solid offer and he was said to have been advised to come to Scotland by Celtic midfielder and fellow countryman Beram Kayal. The lure of La Liga is what is believed to have swung Hemed, who was out of contract with Maccabi Haifa.

After going into administration at the end of last season, Real Mallorca avoided relegation under new manager Michael Laudrup though there are still reported difficulties with the administrators.
