Hannah Miley dominates over short course with ten golds

HANNAH Miley achieved a perfect ten out of ten gold medals at the Scottish Gas National short-course Championships.

She completed the victory haul at Tollcross Leisure Centre in Glasgow yesterday by taking the 400 metre individual medley and adding the 200m freestyle and breaststroke.

The 20-year-old was in a class of her own in her specialist 400m medley – she won the European Championship short-course gold in Istanbul last month – and finished more than 11 seconds ahead of 16-year-old Corrie Scott who represents South Lanarkshire in a time of 4:39.12.

"These three days was a big effort after some really tough training," said Miley, who is coached by her father, Patrick.

"I've stepped up to doing 70,000 to 75,000 metres a week over 12 sessions in the pool and also have lots of out of water work. I'm also having to fit in my sports science degree at Robert Gordon's University, so it is hard.

"But I have decided that for the next two years (in the lead up to the 2012 Olympics] that I just have to isolate myself and concentrate solely on swimming and studies."

The only hiccup for Miley is that her regular training venue of the Garioch Pool in Inverurie is to close today until around the end of next month. With the European Championship trials beckoning in March, it is hardly ideal preparation for the Scot.

"It is a pain, but the university has been very good and I'm going to use their pool and I also hope to go to Stirling for some long course training," said Miley, who hails from Aberdeenshire.

Warrender's Lewis Smith, who swam for Great Britain in last year's world championships, made it a hat-trick of victories in the individual medley events. He completed the set with a time of 4:18.02 in his favourite, 400m individual medley.

City of Glasgow's Robbie Renwick made it four golds in the freestyle, and completed an impressive set by taking the 200m title, the distance over which he reached the Olympic final in Beijing two years ago.
