Hamilton postponement leaves just three games in SPL

ONLY three of the six Scottish Premier League fixtures scheduled for this weekend will go ahead after Hamilton's match against Hibernian was called off yesterday morning.

The adverse weather conditions had already claimed the Celtic v Kilmarnock and Dundee United v Motherwell games, and Hamilton conceded defeat shortly after 10.30am yesterday after their pitch was deemed unplayable.

Inverness are confident their lunchtime clash against SPL leaders Rangers will go ahead after a team of workers and volunteers cleared snow off their pitch, while St Mirren's game against St Johnstone is also due to take place after a snow plough was brought in to deal with the ice outside their stadium.

Hearts v Aberdeen is on track to beat the weather after the area surrounding Tynecastle passed a precautionary inspection yesterday. The Gorgie club had removed cast-iron guttering from the roof of their main stand, some of which had been dislodged by the snow and smashed through the dugouts. However, the club still strongly advised fans not to travel by car and to arrive at Tynecastle at least 45 minutes before kick-off.

Three matches in the First Division could take place. Partick Thistle's match with Ross County will go ahead at Firhill, which staged the Glasgow v Toulouse Heineken Cup rugby match without any problems last night.

However, there is a pitch inspection at Cappielow at 8.30 to determine whether Morton can host their match with Dundee, while Queen of the South have requested a pitch inspection at East End Park for 9am before making the trip to face Dunfermline. In the Second Division, Peterhead v Brechin City will go ahead as planned, and East Fife are still hopeful that their match with Stenhousemuir will survive, with a 10am pitch inspection planned.

It is a similar story in the Third Division, with Annan staging a 10am inspection ahead of their intended match with Clyde, while the Montrose v Elgin and Stranraer v Berwick games were yesterday given the all-clear.
