Green light for fans despite safety fears

CELTIC have belatedly issued season-ticket renewal forms to members of the Green Brigade section of their support - on the basis they refrain from behaviour described by the club as "lateral movement".

The club had delayed issuing forms to fans in section 111 of Celtic Park after Glasgow City Council's safety team for sports grounds expressed concerns over the co-ordinated jumping of the most vocal group of supporters.

A statement on the club's website read: "Celtic is pleased to announce that is has received confirmation from the safety team that the issuing of season books for this section can now be made on the basis that all season book holders within this section refrain from any lateral movement.

"Clearly, the club has worked hard to ensure that we can maintain this section and we are pleased that the safety team has not sought to impose any capacity reduction at this stage.

"The club was closely involved in the formation of this section and fully recognises the positive support for the team that has been shown from this area. We look forward to next season and thank supporters in this section for their continued backing."

In a letter to season ticket holders in Section 111, the club had stated: "During the latter part of the season, there has been progress made in reducing the problem of overcrowding and congestion by persons from other parts of the ground migrating to Section 111.

"Your season membership renewal is offered to you on the condition that you do not participate in lateral movement during matches. It has been made clear to the club that failure to comply with this condition will result in the need for spectator capacity in Section 111 to be reduced and could place your season membership at risk."

Earlier this week Celtic manager Neil Lennon urged fans to halt the re-emergence of unacceptable songs and chants during matches.
