World’s the oyster for Hull

WHILE it was encouraging to see five Scots – Vikki Laing, Sally Watson, Heather MacRae, Kylie Walker and Pamela Feggans – make the cut in the Ladies European Tour event in Morocco, a player sporting the three lions of England on her cap ultimately underlined her potential by winning the Lalla Meryem Cup.

Charley Hull, a bubbly young lady from Woburn, has long been regarded as a special talent and the world looks her oyster on the back of a first professional win, one that was secured a few days before her 18th birthday with a closing nine-under-par 62.

Originally excluded from the line-up for missing a trial before the Ladies Golf Union sensibly made a U-turn, Hull was a member of the Great Britain & Ireland team that dramatically won the 2012 Curtis Cup at Nairn.

She didn’t exactly set the world alight on the Moray coast, where her only win came in the closing singles, albeit a valuable one, but Hull certainly made the golfing world sit up and take notice as she vindicated her selection as Europe’s youngest Solheim Cup player by thumping Paula Creamer in the singles to help secure a first victory on US soil in Denver last year.

Now Hull has joined Lydia Ko, Lexi Thompson and Ariya Jutanugarn in winning either LET or LPGA titles before her 18th birthday and it won’t be long surely before she is receiving a plethora of invitations to play in US events.

Meanwhile, with our numbers bolstered and established players finding form, it hopefully won’t be too long before we see a Scot other than Catriona Matthew winning again on the LET.
