USA in pole to retain PGA Cup

Great Britain & Ireland’s club professionals were left in a position perilously close to surrender as the Americans found some ammunition late on in a gruelling second day in the 26th PGA Cup.

Four points down overnight, the home team shared the morning foursomes for the second day running, leading in two of the fourballs and standing all square in the other two with five holes to play. However, as messages were relayed to Russell Weir as the GB&I captain, a diabetic, paid a precautionary visit to a local hospital over concerns about his blood levels, the Americans won the session 3∫-1∫.

Leading 10∫-5∫, it means they need just two-and-a-half points from today’s ten singles to retain the Llandudno Trophy and three to win the biennial joust for the fourth match in a row. In short, GB&I need something similar to the Miracle at Medinah.

Sent out first in both sessions, Scottish duo Greig Hutcheon and Scott Henderson delivered two second-day points, recovering from four down after eight in the morning to win on the last, then producing an 8-under better-ball of 28 en route to a 6 and 5 success.

“I’m knackered at the end of a long season and have also picked up a cold, but I’m digging deep and today was a good one for Scotty and me,” said Hutcheon, the Tartan Tour No 1.
