US PGA opts for Bethpage Black for 2024 Ryder Cup

The course in New York will also be the venue for the the 2019 US PGA Championship, having hosted the US Open in 2002 and 2009.

The Black Course is a 7,486 yard, par 71 which will provide a stern test for players on both sides, with Tiger Woods being the only man in the field to shoot under par when he won the US Open there in 2002.

“How fitting it is that we will be taking two of golf’s premier events to a state that was the site of our first PGA Championship and to a spectacular course whose design was influenced by one of golf’s most accomplished architects and a friend of The PGA of America,” said PGA of America President Ted Bishop at the official announcement at Bethpage State Park yesterday. “It is exciting that both the PGA Championship and the Ryder Cup will come to New York, which is home to some of the most passionate and knowledgeable sports fans in the world.”

Bethpage Black opened for play in 1936 and was designed by renowned architect Albert Warren Tillinghast, who has also created Baltusrol, Winged Foot and the San Francisco Golf Club. Tillinghast was a guest at an exploratory meeting of the PGA of America in January 1916, and the governing body was officially formed three months later.

Europe will attempt to defend the Ryder Cup they won at Medinah in such dramatic style at Gleneagles in 2014 before the biennial event returns to the States at Hazeltine.

France will then host its first Ryder Cup in 2018 at Le Golf National near Paris before Whistling Straits hosts the next tournament in America. The 2022 course in Europe has yet to be decided.

“As a New Yorker, I can’t tell you how excited I am to be a part of today’s announcement,” said PGA of America chief executive officer Pete Bevacqua.

“New York is part of the fabric of the history of The PGA of America, from our founding in New York City in 1916, to hosting multiple championships and having four great PGA Sections within the state. We are grateful to Governor (Andrew) Cuomo’s commitment to hosting these great events at Bethpage and we look forward to working with both local and state officials to add an unforgettable chapter in golf history at Bethpage.”

Jason Dufner will defend his US PGA title at Valhalla, the host of the 2008 Ryder Cup, next year before the tournament moves on to Whistling Straits, Baltusrol, Quail Hollow and Bellerive before Bethpage gets its turn.
