The Scots, a three-man SGU team of Bradley Neil, Grant Forrest and Chris Robb, started with a six under par tally on day one and built on that today to push into contention.

Scotland have moved to 15 under par for the opening 36 holes – with the best two scores from three counting each day – to trail leaders Argentina by three strokes at the 67-team event, played over four rounds.

Over the Karuizawa Golf East – Oshitate Course, Amateur champion Neil from Blairgowrie fired a superb six-under-par 65, featuring seven birdies and just the one dropped shot, to give the team score a great boost.

St Andrews Links champion Forrest (Craigielaw) added a second successive 68, with Meldrum House’s Chris Robb, the Fairstone Scottish Amateur champion, posting a 74 for the non-counting score.

America, Sweden and Switzerland are all tied for second place on -17, with Canada fifth on -16. England and Spain share sixth spot with the Scots.

Steve Paulding, Scottish Golf Performance Manager, said: “I’m very happy with the team’s performance. Bradley came out fighting, making three early birdies and a strong finish for his 65. Grant also played solidly and we’re happy to be withing three shots of the lead.

“It’s very tight at the top with 20 teams 10 under par or better. We’re looking for another strong performance tomorrow to keep us within striking distance of the leaders for the final day. There are a lot of strong teams and good players all wanting to win this one.”
