Schools golf: Trophy joy for late reserve Rankine

Govan High School’s Jennifer Rankine only got into the Scottish Ladies’ Golfing Association’s Under-16 Open Strokeplay Championship as a late reserve – she then grabbed her opportunity and went home with the handicap trophy.

Playing off 28, the 12-year-old Haggs Castle member had net scores of 69 and 62, her second-round 90 becoming her career best scratch score.

“I have only been golfing for two years but there is a good junior section at Haggs,” said the first year pupil. “My wee brother, Thomas, is nine and he is also a member.

“I love my golf and am looking forward to playing as much as possible this summer.”

Strathaven High School’s Katie Scott was another to shatter her handicap. Playing alongside Jennifer, the 16 handicapper also shot a net score of 62 in the second round and was fourth overall in the handicap section.

“The 88 was my best ever score,” said the delighted 14-year-old, who plays at Strathaven and has already been picked out as a talent by the SLGA. She is a member of the Foundation Squad.

“I have really enjoyed the winter coaching with Kevin Craggs. It’s helped my swing and the mental side. I had three birdies in my 88 and this is a great way to start the season. “This summer, I want to play in a lot more Open tournament and all the Scottish girls’ events.”
