While still to make a “definite decision” about his future, the 19-year-old from Blairgowrie won’t necessarily be a contender for Great Britain & Ireland’s biennial bout against the Americans.

“I’ve just got two dates in mind,” said Neil ahead of his Masters appearance in just over a week’s time. “One after the US Open (in mid-June) and then after the Walker Cup.

“It’ll come down to how I feel. I’ll be taking into consideration whether I think I’m ready, whether I’m playing well, whether I’m comfortable.”

Nigel Edwards, the GB&I captain, will be one of the first people to know his decision. “He’s not said to me ‘you should stay amateur’,” added Amateur champion Neil, who lost by 3&2 yesterday to the US Amateur title holder, Gunn Yang, in the Georgia Cup.

“Obviously I’ll chat to him before I make my decision. If I turn pro before the Walker Cup, he’ll be one of the first I tell beforehand, out of courtesy. I wouldn’t want to hear it from anyone else.

“It’ll all come to how I play in the Masters, the US Open and a few other events.”
