Paul O’Hara heads for Coventry as top Scot

PAUL O’Hara, a two-time beaten finalist in the Scottish Amateur Championship, is being sent to Coventry but he won’t mind that one bit after winning the Scottish qualifier for the PGA Assistants’ Championship.

A one-under-par 68 at wet and windy Auchterarder yesterday earned O’Hara, who is attached to Clydeway Golf, top spot amongst 18 qualifiers from the Tartan Tour for the Powerade-sponsored event in the Midlands on 7-9 August.

O’Hara, whose older brother Steven is currently on the Challenge Tour, bagged six birdies as he finished a shot ahead of joint runners-up Scott McGrenaghan (Cochrane Castle) and Colin Robinson (Prestonfield).

Other qualifiers included Keir McNicoll, who played off plus six when he turned professional and is now attached to Gullane, and Oliver Huish, the son of former North Berwick professional David. Emma Fairnie, who is also on Alasdair Good’s staff at Gullane, missed out by a shot.

Past winners of the Assistants’ title include Tony Jacklin (1965), Barry Lane (1983), Colin Brooks (1989), Craig Everett (1993) and David Orr (2002).
