McKechnie eyes up spot in Challenge

PAUL McKechnie, who is attached to the Braids Hills Golf Centre, is tantalisingly close to earning a step up to the
Challenge Tour at the age of 36.

It follows him staying in the top five on the PGA EuroPro Tour Order of Merit after
sharing fifth spot in the
Eagle Orchid Scottish Masters at Montrose.

Welshman Oliver Farr claimed the title, beating England’s Daniel Gavins in a play-off after the pair had tied on 208 after 54 holes.

The top five on the Order of Merit will graduate to the Challenge Tour and there’s only one more regular event left – at Moor Allerton in a fortnight’s time – before the season-ending Tour Championship at Prince’s in Kent next month.

North Berwick rookie Neil Henderson shared tenth in the Angus event after he signed
off with a pair of 68s and played his last 38 holes without
dropping a shot.

Ranfurly Castle amateur Sam Binning was five-under for his round and sharing third with just three holes to play but dropped a shot on the 16th and then ran up a quadruple-bogey eight on the 17th in a 71. It left him in a tie for 15th alongside Kirkhill’s Paul Shields.
