Matthew to make return home for club promotion

Matthew, from North Berwick, has signed a deal to help raise the profile of Archerfield Links, the private members' development on the outskirts of Gullane.

The deal will see Matthew promote the exclusive golf club while she plays on the LPGA Tour in the United States this year.

Matthew, one of the top players in women's golf, will also host a new event for amateur women, which will include a golf clinic taken by Matthew herself, and an women-only event on the Fidra Links.

"I am really looking forward to helping promote Archerfield Links this year, as it is such a magnificent property and will also give me a chance to promote East Lothian, which I believe to have some of the best golfing venues in the world," said Matthew.

Archerfield, which opened 18 months ago, is proving extremely popular with strong sales of the 20,000 debentures likely to lead to an increase in price this summer.

The cost for a team of three at the Ladies Day, on July 19, is 225 and includes continental breakfast with Bucks Fizz on arrival, golf, a champagne reception and lunch along with a goodie bag presented by Harvey Nichols as well as a clinic hosted by Catriona.

BABERTON member James Burnett has been appointed to the board of the Scottish Golf Union as a non-executive director.

The voluntary position has responsibility to oversee the development elements of the SGU's work and this primarily relates to encouraging more people to take up the game.

"As an active member of several golf clubs, I have an insight into current trends and opportunities which exist for clubs and also a few problems which some clubs are facing," said Burnett.

"I am keenly aware of the importance of developing the game at junior and family levels and, in my role at the SGU, I very much look forward to contributing to the support of clubs throughout Scotland, growing the game of golf and promoting club membership."

A former chairman of the RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) in Scotland, Burnett has just stepped down after two years as captain of Baberton and will take over from Willie Young (Millport Golf Club) who retires after four years on the SGU board.

As well as Baberton, Burnett is also a member at Dunbar and Elgin golf clubs and is a former member of Ladybank in Fife.

Since retiring from his position as senior partner, Scotland of Donaldson's Chartered Surveyors in Edinburgh, Burnett has served on a number of boards, councils and committees.

As one of three directors of Hermitage Children's Golf Course in Edinburgh, he has been involved with the planning, funding, development and management of this 12-hole course which has introduced over 650 children to golf since opening in 2004.

At Baberton, he has been instrumental in promoting junior and family golf and has been closely involved in a new clubhouse development, new USGA greens, course drainage and improvement, as well as constitutional restructuring and incorporation.
