Law reigns as Links Golf Cup goes down a treat

Won by Enville’s David Law with a Stableford total of 127 points, the event visited Gullane No 1 and No 2, Longniddry and, for the final round, North Berwick, where Duncan Thomas from Maidenhead recorded its first hole-in-one, at the sixth.

“The event was clearly a resounding success and the feedback from the competitors has been absolutely outstanding,” said tournament organiser Andy Bowen. “They were delighted with the golf courses, especially Gullane No 1 and North Berwick, East Lothian as a whole and, in particular, the organisation of the event.”

That was backed up by a tweet from one competitor, which read: “I have played in 100s of amateur events but none as well organised and professionally run as the Links Golf Cup.”

This year’s entry was 84 – double that for the inaugural staging – and Bowen believes it will grow by a similar number in 12 months’ time.

“I met all the competitors off the 18th green at North Berwick and pretty much all said he will definitely be back next year,” he added.

“Many of them said they will be bringing friends along, too. I also have strong interest from a number of new guys after seeing the event on social media and want to play.

“The only restrictions on next year and growing the event is the daylight and members’ tee time restrictions at golf clubs. It was getting a bit dark as the leaders putted out on 18 after a long round.

“In truth, I don’t want it to grow too big. One of the reasons it works so well is the social side and the camaraderie amongst everyone. I know all of the competitors names and golf clubs, and I would lose that if we had 200, for example. Personally I think 120 is the limit.”

Law also won the Par 3 Challenge, while the team honours went to ‘Yorkshire Tees’.
