At today’s annual general meeting in Edinburgh, SLGA members voted 204-0 - an even more emphatic endorsement than in 2011.

Then, the SLGA were around 93 per cent in favour of the proposal to bring the Scottish game into line with the rest of the world by amalgamating with the SGU.

However, it then failed to secure the required support from the men and it’s taken close to four years to get a second proposal on the table.

Following today’s vote, it’s back over to the men again to decide if an umbrella body will finally created, with the SGU vote expected to take place in March.

It will follow an independent poll of member clubs that will run until the end of this month.

“We are delighted, for a second time, the voting members of the SLGA have backed the proposal yo amalgamate with the SGU,” said chairman Beth Paterson.

“Unifying the amateur game for men and women is a positive step for both the game and the participants.”

Welcoming today’s vote, SGU chairman Tom Craig said: “It is now over to the SGU clubs and the 16 Area Associations to make their decision.

“This is an historic opportunity to step confidently forward as one - Areas, Counties, clubs and staff - and share knowledge and ideas to make the game at all levels stronger.”
