Goosen and Furyk set pace in Texas

Furyk and Retief Goosen were amongst the movers in the early stages on day two of the Valero Texas Open.

The tournament in San Antonio is the last tour event before next week’s US Masters and Furyk and Goosen, who hold three US Opens between them, are among a host of big names hoping to gain momentum.

Furyk followed up Thursday’s 69 with a round of 70 to sit five under, one shot behind 
clubhouse leaders Daniel Summerhays and Charley Hoffman, and Goosen went one better with a 69 to sit in the same group.

A bogey at the last was the only blemish on Furyk’s card which contained three birdies while Goosen hit five birdies and two bogeys.

Hoffman carded six birdies and one bogey to move into the lead with a 67.

KJ Choi had a bogey-free 67 to sit one shot back while Brendon de Jonge was also on five under after three birdies in his final six holes powered him to a 69.

Summerhays shot a 69 to set the early pace.

Starting on the back nine, the American bogeyed the 11th before a run of three birdies saw him surge up the leaderboard.

A further birdie was to come on the first to move him to six under and two further bogeys and birdies saw him finish the day that way.
