Bob MacIntyre joined Tiger Woods in signing off with a sub-par round in the 102nd PGA Championship as the young Scot completed a good week’s work in his first major on US soil.

The 24-year-old left-hander from Oban covered the back nine in two-under 33 as he signed for a 69 in the final round to finish with a three-over 283 total at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco.

It was a splendid effort from MacIntyre in only his second major, having tied for sixth behind Shane Lowry in last year’s Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

MacIntyre, inset, last season’s European Tour Rookie of the Year, is now heading home for back-to-back events on his home circuit at Celtic Manor before turning his attention to next month’s US Open at Winged Foot.

Woods, a three-time winner, is set to head into that event in buoyant mood after being pleased with a closing 67 – his best score of the week – in California for a one-under total.

“I made a few (putts) early on, and just kind of kept the momentum going,” said Woods. “It’s something I hadn’t done the last two days, and it was an under-par tournament score, which yesterday I was saying that’s kind of what I wanted to do. I made it happen today.”

The 15-time major winner had made only one appearance since the PGA Tour’s restart in June heading into this event. “I think what I got out of this week is that I felt I was competitive,” he added. “If I would have made a few more putts on Friday early on, and the same thing with Saturday, I felt like I would have been right there with a chance come today. It didn’t happen, but I fought hard,

“That’s golf. We lose way more tournaments than we win. But, overall, I think I had one three-putt for the week and I had no doubles, and that’s always something that you want to do in 72 holes of a major championship. Unfortunately. I didn’t make enough birdies.”
