It will be the first time the Northern Irish venue has hosted the world’s oldest major since 1951, when England’s Max Faulkner was the champion.

There had been concerns about the local infrastructure’s ability to cope but the Irish Open was held there in 2012 and drew huge crowds.

The course itself is regarded as one of the finest links in the world and has been backed by the likes of major champions Rory McIlroy, Darren Clarke and Graeme McDowell.
