Golf: Oldcorn tops the pile in Eyemouth after his flawless 71

FORMER PGA champion ­Andrew Oldcorn produced a late show to claim the scratch spoils in yesterday’s Edinburgh & East of Scotland Alliance event at Eyemouth.

It looked for most of the day that level-par 72s from Greenburn’s Scott Catlin and Dalmahoy duo Mark Kerr and Jamie McLeary would be good enough to top the leaderboard.

But, playing in one of the final few groups, Kings Acre ace Oldcorn carded a 71 – he had 17 pars and a single birdie at the 16th – to pip the trio. On a day when 78 players visited the picturesque Berwickshire course, Musselburgh’s Phil Leggate claimed the Alliance Trophy as the overall winner.

The 11-handicapper signed for a net 68 to finish two ahead of Dalmahoy’s Steven Lees, who blew his chance by running up a triple-bogey 8 at the last.

Grant Skinner of Glencorse finished third on 72, while the senior spoils were shared by Borders pair John Denham (Torwoodlee) and David Watson (Peebles) with net 74s.
