Former Southerness player David James stormed back into contention at the halfway stage of the European Senior Tour Qualifying School in Portugal.

Outside the top 30 after an opening 73 on Pestana Golf Resort’s Vale da Pinta course, James carded a second-round 67 to leap into a tie for seventh, five shots off the lead held by Englishman Graeme Bell.

Bell took a significant step towards one of the six full cards available for the 2013 season with a round of 66, a superb putting performance seeing him open up a three-shot lead over the rest of the field after two rounds.

Aberdonian Peter Smith is tied for 14th, eight off the lead but Tartan Tour stalwart Robert Arnott is outside the top 40 on five over, 13 shots behind Bell.
